Tomorrowland opens this Friday. Here are some things to know before you see the movie.
1. The movie opens at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. “it’s a small world” debuted at the fair and entertained guests as a tribute to peace and hope and as a salute to UNICEF for a full year before being moved to Disneyland.
2. In an effort to get everything “just right” for the movie, Disney recreated the “it’s a small world” boats used back at the World’s Fair. The boats hand padded seats and lovely wood trim. I had the opportunity to ride in one of the boats that played a very important role in the movie last year at the “it’s a small world” 50th anniversary event.
3. Actor George Clooney said at a recent press conference that he loves the movie is about something more and different than other blockbusters. “[It] speaks to the idea that your future is not preordained and predestined, and that if you’re involved, a single voice can make a difference.”
4. The story of “Tomorrowland” started with a box labeled “1952,” supposedly discovered by accident in the Disney Studios archive. The mystery box contained all sorts of fascinating models and blueprints, photographs and letters related to the inception of Tomorrowland and the 1964 World’s Fair. Writer/producer Damon Lindelof was excited by the find and recalls, “I began to imagine that the contents of the box were a guide to a secret story that nobody knew. But if so, what would that story be? And the most obvious answer to me was that there really was a place called Tomorrowland that was not a theme park but existed somewhere in the real world.”
5. The film had over 90 different combinations of sets and locations, and moved 10 times, almost unheard of in the industry. Locations included Spain, Anaheim, the Bahamas and Vancouver.
