Attraction Review: Goofy’s Sky School

July 5, 2011 in All Posts, attraction tips, attractions, disney california adventure, disneyland resort, fastpass, Tips & Tricks for Families by Babes in Disneyland

On Thursday, June 30, Goofy’s Sky School opened at Disney California Adventure.  The attraction is a steel roller coaster located in Paradise Pier and themed after the cartoon, Goofy’s Glider.  Goofy’s Sky School is not a new attraction; it is the Mulholland Madness coaster re-themed to be more…Disney.

Goofy’s Sky School is a fun attraction and while it’s not a “big time” roller coaster with crazy twists, turns, and loops, it is a lot of fun…especially for those of us who aren’t necessarily roller coaster enthusiasts.  The attraction takes riders on their maiden flights as new pilots entering Goofy’s flight school.  Under his tutelage, pilots engage in tight turns and dips, feeling like they may very well fly off the track at any moment.

Goofy’s Sky School doesn’t present any sort of real technical advances in ride making; instead, it takes guests back to a time when seaside piers offered visitors a chance to ride small coasters in the warm sunshine.  The new theming is really cute, but is not immersive like some of the resort’s other more well known high-speed attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad or the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

As for age appropriateness, that is partially dictated by the attraction height requirement of 42 inches.  Children under age 7 must be accompanied by another guest age 14 years or older.  My son is 6 years old, and while he is tall enough to ride Goofy’s Sky School, I don’t know if he’s quite ready for it yet.  If you aren’t sure if your Goofy’s Sky School is right for your child, consider using the rider switch pass.  One adult (and your party) can go on the attraction while children in question wait with another adult.  The adult who waited can then go on the attraction with the child(ren) in question.  If the children won’t be riding, the adult who waited may board the attraction with one additional adult so that they don’t have to ride alone.  (Just ask an attraction host or hostess for a rider switch pass and he or she will be happy to explain it in further detail.)

Couple that rider switch pass with the fact that Goofy’s Sky School is a FASTPASS attraction and this may be a perfect “first coaster” for younger guests.

Because this is a high-speed, turbulent attraction, it is not recommend for guests with high blood pressure or a history of heart, neck, or back problems.  Expectant mothers should definitely not ride this attraction.  Guests in wheelchairs will have to transfer out of their chairs to board the attraction.

I wasn’t a fan of Mulholland Madness, so I’m glad to know it’s the same track. I didn’t enjoy “feeling like they may very well fly off the track at any moment.” I love that it has a Goofy theme, though! I didn’t quite understand the link Mulholland had to Disney before. Thanks for the great review 🙂
