CONGRATS, TO GIVEAWAY WINNER, JEN TUCKER!
The “it’s a small world” attraction at Disney theme parks is well known to be a favorite of children worldwide, fittingly so! Mary Blair, who contributed to designing the ride, as well as many other Disney films and works of art, was able to capture the carefree and fanciful spirit of children in different lands in a captivating way. Her style and art are now timeless classics.
Disney has taken the theme and unique design of the “it’s a small world” attraction and created a series of children’s books that follow that same genre – exploring different countries of the world, through their children. Twelve books, in cardboard and paperback, teach children about international customs (such as what children around the world do to celebrate Christmas or winter holidays), different languages (how to say “hello” and “I love you”), and relevant issues (like going to school and healthy eating), or simply put beautiful illustrations to the words of the Sherman brothers famous song.
I fell in love with these books when I first saw them at Disneyland, and picked up the original “Disney: It’s a Small World” hardcover book for my son, and a “Disney It’s a Small World: Hello, World!” cardboard book for my baby daughter. Ever since then, we’ve been hooked and have purchased nearly all of the series – including one of the most recently published books “Disney It’s a Small World: I Love You!” – which will be a Valentine’s gift!
My one-year-old daughter’s favorite cardboard book is “It’s a Small World: Furry Friends!“, because there are “feelies” on the pages; but my four-year-old son prefers the paperback books, and especially loved the “Disney It’s a Small World: Christmas Around the World” book this past holiday.
I’m basically in love with all things Mary Blair (art, calendars, books, you-name-it), so I love the original book featuring the lyrics to “It’s a Small World”, but my son prefers the app version. The pages of the book are recreated into an animated app for Apple devices, as well as the Nook, that lets your child listen as the book is read or sung to them, and interact with the children and scenes on the pages. Although the educational factor is not the main purpose of this app (children will learn cause and effect, learn what animals can be found in different regions of the world, and learn different ways to say “hello”), it’s thoroughly adorable, wholesome, and entertaining for youngsters.
