With the rush (and crowds!) of the holiday season behind us, now is a great time to plan a Dreamy Disney Date inside Disneyland Park and enjoy some kid-free magic! The recent grand opening of the Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe on Main Street inspired my “practically perfect” Mary Poppins themed date with Chris. Here’s how to enjoy a jolly holiday with your Burt or Mary:
Enjoy a great brunch together at the NEW Mary Poppins inspired Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe on Main Street.
This new bakery cafe is located where the old Plaza Pavilion used to sit, on the west side of Main Street past Coke Corner (formerly the Annual Passholder Processing Center). Burt’s penguin friends greet you from their stained glass homes as you enter into the turn of the century cafe. The Mary Poppins inspired decor — including carousels, figurines, paintings, and silhouettes — create a lovely date environment.
Along with the delicious pastries and coffee offerings that were once offered at Blue Ribbon Bakery (including espresso beverages, huge cinnamon rolls, Matterhorn macaroons, Mickey shaped cookies, and more!), Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe serves salads, sandwiches, soups, and house specialties like a gourmet grilled cheese served with tomato basil soup. Sweet treats (that are all great to share) include lemon strawberry cupcakes, chocolate cream cheese bars, pecan bars, Mickey shaped tarts, and more!
This is a great his and hers eating location with the hearty soup and sandwich offerings for him and salads and lighter soups for her (I’m sure Mary would allow ladies to eat the heartier meals, too!). On our date, Chris and I shared and LOVED the roast beef sandwich (loaded with melted cheese and grilled onions) and a cinnamon twist pastry. To complete our Burt and Mary meal, we shared a refreshingly delicious strawberry/raspberry “Practically Perfect Punch”, which we enjoyed at a table along Main Street.
Take a ride on King Arthur’s Carrousel and visit Julie Andrews’ horse “Jingles.”
Though not typically thought of as an “adult” ride, King Arthur’s Carrousel can be a romantic spin together, especially when holding hands. Look for a white horse on the attraction that has gold bells and a painting of a certain famous lady’s umbrella to continue your Mary Poppins date. This is “Jingles”, who was given to and named by Julie Andrews for the 50th anniversary of Mary Poppins.
Get a hand-cut silhouette together.
Inspired by the silhouettes of Mary Poppins and Jane and Michael Banks inside of the Jolly Holiday Bakery, a fun and unique part of this date is getting a couple’s silhouette cut out at the Silhouette Studio on Main Street. Since Mary never pulled a digital camera out of that magical bag of hers, it seems fitting to save the memory with an era appropriate memento.
Share an ice cream cone while the Dapper Dans sing.
The best way to end this turn-of-the-century Mary Poppins inspired date, as well as how Chris and I like to end most of our days at Disneyland, is by stopping by the Main Street Cone Shop (while the Gibson Girl is closed) for a double scoop of your favorite ice cream flavors — in a waffle cone, of course! If a spoon full of sugar really does help the medicine go down, then several spoonfuls of this sweet treat will help your day go down — in date history! This experience is especially sweet when the Dapper Dans are nearby, singing a beautiful barbershop melody to serenade the end of your jolly holiday together.
I hope you and your sweetie have a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time on your “practically perfect” date!
