Home video is one of those areas of technology that is constantly changing and evolving. With VHS cassettes and laser disks far in the past, the present and future of home video viewing is live streaming titles you purchase that are hosted in online for convenient viewing on demand.
I have to admit, I have an enviable DVD collection. My husband loves movies and… well… let’s just say that DVDs are a perk to running a Disney blog. Recently, Disney encouraged me to try out Disney Movies Anywhere. I was given a free download of the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and I was excited to try out the service and try out the prospect of having a movie at the ready on my iPhone or iPad when I needed it for unexpected waits at doctor appointments and such.
Because my family uses Dish Network and not a television streaming service like Amazon Fire, etc., this review will focus on my experience using Disney Movies Anywhere on iOS devices. Considering I am a Mac girl through and through, I spend more time on my Apple devices than any other form of technology, and I hope my fellow Apple lovers will find this helpful.
Download the App
The first thing I did was download the Disney Movies Anywhere app to my iPhone and iPad and logged in. If you already have an account you use with Disney online, you do NOT need to create a new account. I was able to use the account I have registered for the Disneyland and Walt Disney World websites, etc. If you have registered for multiple Disney sites using the same password but different login names and/or passwords, you may be prompted to merge your accounts. I found this a bit easier to take care of this on my computer. Click here to download the iOS app.
Connect to iTunes
Right now, when you connect your Disney Movies Anywhere account to your iTunes (or other accounts like Google Play), you get the movie “Monsters Inc.” added to your account FOR FREE!
It’s Time to Shop!
Once you are registered you can now shop and purchase movies. Movies range in price, and these movies are permanent purchases–not one-time rentals. In my case, I had a free download of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which I added to my account and immediately had access to really cool bonus features–some of which not available on the DVD version.
If you have a DVD collection, and haven’t been redeeming Disney Movie Rewards or have been disregarding those slips of paper inside the DVD cases as trash or advertisements, you must redeem them! Many are good for free HD Digital movies (AKA movies for your Disney Movies Anywhere account). I went through our stash of movies and found plenty of unredeemed codes that I was able to redeem for free digital movies and points towards Disney Movie Rewards. (The codes in the photo below have already been redeemed.)
It’s Time to Watch Disney Movies… ANYWHERE
The great thing about Disney movies Anywhere is that they can really be viewed anywhere–on your phone, tablet, computer or television. When I have a bit of downtime, I love being able to click on the app and watch bonus content and deleted scenes from my favorite movies. At the moment, I can’t get enough of the deleted scenes from one of my favorite movies of all time, Cinderella.
If you are a diehard Mac user like me, you already likely have Apple TV or the connector that connects your MacBook or Mac desktop to your TV, which means you are good to go to watch these movies on your TV. If you have Google Play, Walmart’s VUDU, Amazon Video, Microsoft Movies & TV, Roku and Android TV on your television, you can connect your account there too. Your Disney Movies Anywhere account is yours no matter what device you login in to access it on!
I received a complimentary download of one of my favorite movies of the year “Avengers: Age of Ultron” in order to do this review. My opinions are my own.
