What’s more American than Mickey Mouse and Oreo cookies? Not much, unless maybe you combine the two. Recently I did just that and made Mickey and Minnie Oreo pops. The pops are a quick, fun, and easy way to share some Disney magic at home. They are something that can be done with the kiddos or can a delicious surprise after a first day at school. Younger children will love the loveable Mickey pops and older children will have fun stirring, dipping, and decorating these tasty treats.
The supplies |
- Double Stuff Oreos
- Mini Oreos
- White sugar pearls
- Bag of candy melts
- Lollipop sticks
- Wax paper
- Cookie sheet
Prep your work station. Putting the sugar pearls in a small bowl is helpful when the time comes to assemble the Minnie Pops. Place the wax paper on the cookie sheet.
Separate about 12 mini Oreos scraping off the middle section. You can easily get all of it off by using the edge of a bowl.
If you scraped your Mini Oreos off on the wax paper, as I did, be sure to clear the wax paper of any Oreo crumbs. You don’t want the crumbs to stick to the pops when you place the pops on the wax paper to dry.
Grab a Double Stuff Oreo and make sure it isn’t cracked or broken. You don’t want a chunk of cookie falling off into your candy melt. Hold your Double Stuff Oreo firmly and dip it half way in the candy melt. After you pull it out, gently tap the Oreo on the side of your bowl to remove any excess candy.
Dip one end of the lollipop stick in the candy melt and then insert it into the dipped Oreo.
Once you’ve done that, you can place the whole thing on the wax paper to dry.
You have several minutes to decorate your pops. Using sugar pearls, gently place them on the Oreo pops in a polka dot pattern. It is tempting to just sprinkle the sugar pearls on the pop, but you won’t have a spread out, polka dot pattern. Placing them one by one distributes them evenly and gives you the cute Minnie pattern.
You can see the pops (and completely immersed Oreo) were just sprinkled with non-pariels. Use any kind of decoration you want: colored sugar, sprinkles, chocolate jimmies, etc.
Candy hearts |
I even tried to dip a couple of Oreos completely including some Mini Oreos. It got pretty messy, pretty quickly and compeltely covering the Mini Oreos was dificult, though they do look cute. Completely dipping the Double Stuff Oreos was easier, but I just wasn’t as satisfied with the end result. I tried adding a Mickey design a few different ways. I tried the sugar pearls and cutting some buttons from yellow candy melts. Here are the results:
To reduce waiting time, place the pops in your fridge.
Give them at least 5-7 minutes to harden so you don’t have any “sticky” pops that aren’t completely dry. My pops were placed in a fairly empty fridge at the very top, which is the coolest place in our fridge. The pops may take longer to harden in the fridge if your fridge is very full or if they are at the bottom. The time it takes for them to harden is dependent on your fridge situation.
Zap-melt about 5 candy melts in a new bowl. Don’t forget to stir.
Then using the end of a lollipop stick, dip the stick in the yellow candy melt and dab it onto the Mickey pops.
Don’t be afraid to gob it on there.
First attempt, not enough candy melt on stick |
Pushed too hard on un-hardened red candy melt. |
Third time’s a charm! Gobs of yellow on a hardened surface. |
Don’t worry about the peaks on the buttons. Let the candy sit at room temperature for about 7 minutes and then you can gently push the peak down with your finger. You could also use melted white chocolate or large circle sprinkles.
Once your pops are completely hardened you are ready for ear assembly.
Ear assembly |
Gently push the Mini Oreos into the top of your Mickey/Minnie pops. If you are using your fridge to reduce waiting time, be careful. Don’t try and assemble the ears if the pops have been chilling for more than 10 minutes. The white center will be too hard and the Mini Oeros will crumble and smash. If the pops have been in the fridge for a while, just let them sit out
An Oreo I decided to dip completely |
The candy melt will thicken the longer it sits at room temperature. I dipped the above Oreo much later than the others and the coating was pretty thick. You can always re-zap your candy melts for another 30 seconds. As you’re dipping, occasionally stir the candy melts to avoid lumps that may form as the candy cools.
This Oreo was just sprinkled with the sugar pearls |

After they harden, enjoy. I loved biting into the dipped Oreo section. The hard texture of the candy combined with the soft cookie center was delicious.
I had to quality check both Mickey and Minnie pops. Just to be sure.
The Mickey and Minnie Oreo pops were so easy to make and took about an hour. After dipping approximately 16 Oreos, I still had about 1/3 of the candy melts left. After showing the kiddos the Mickey pops, the 16 pops disappeared like magic! They were gone in less than 24 hours.

Adorable idea! You could also use yellow mini M&Ms for the buttons on Mickey’s pants.
