I recently had the opportunity to review the movie “Geek Charming” on Disney DVD. This movie, which originally ran on the Disney Channel, stars Sarah Hyland (“Modern Family”) and Matt Prokop (“High School Musical 3: Senior Year”) and is a classic coming-of-age tale that explores the wonderful world of high school popularity.
The movie follows Dylan Shoenfield, a 16-year-old spoiled, uber popular junior at Woodlands Academy. Dylan’s ultimate life goal is to be crowned Blossom Queen at the Spring Formal–the ultimate badge of popularity and status.
When Dylan accidentally drops her expensive designer handbag into the mall fountain, the school geek Josh Rosen, jumps in to retrieve it. Dylan wouldn’t normally give the time of day to a guy like Josh, but agrees to return the favor and be the subject for the documentary film he wants to make for the school’s film contest.
As you can imagine, in true Disney fashion, Dylan and Josh learn through the course of the film that both are not at all what they thought–teaching valuable lessons about the importance of not labeling others and judging them before getting to know them. The film has positive adult role models that encourage the kids to do the right thing. And of course, as sweetly expected innocent flirting…and a bit love…blossoms between the two.
Geek Charming is a feel-good movie that can be enjoyed by tweens and teens (and parents) alike. It is probably best for children 8 years and older and likely of more interest to girls than boys.
