Remember those Disney read-along books on cassette (or in my case, on vinyl) back when you were a kid? I loved them! When my mom was cleaning house or busy doing something, I could turn one on and become immersed in a book, long before I could read it to myself.
When my youngest son was born, I searched high and low for read-along Disney books and found a limited collection at a second-hand children’s shop. Having three boys, the books (and cassettes) wore out quickly.
In today’s day of technology goodies, Disney Digital books fulfill what we remember as read-alongs from childhood. The book apps are more than just books, they provide children a multi-media literature experience. The apps allow children to be read to, read and explore on their own, or engage in activities based on the book.
As a former teacher and reading specialist, I endorse the Disney Digital books because they offer children and dynamic way to engage in literature. For emerging readers, the read-along function is invaluable, as it demonstrates text flow and appropriate pacing. For skilled readers, the book provides kids the experience to dive deeper into the text–something we couldn’t do with our read-alongs as kids.
