Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has always been one of my favorite movies. When it was announced that not one but two Snow White-based movies would be released in 2012, I was skeptical. How could a film hold up to the Walt Disney classic?
Snow White and the Huntsman was released into theaters on June 1, 2012, and will be out on DVD next Tuesday, September 11. The film, starring Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart, Sam Claflin, Ian McShane and Bob Hoskins takes viewers on an exciting adventure filled with magic, suspense, incredible action and spellbinding special effect. The film offers true fairy tale fans an adult version of Snow White that is smart, entertaining and engaging. Snow White fans will appreciate the subtle changes between the well-known Disney version.
What I loved:
- I loved the special effects. A lot of times, special effects feel indulgent but in this film they are incredibly seemless and are a major vehicle for the film and its story line. Everything looked natural–not cartoon-ish–in the a world of magic and enchantment. This is not always the case in movies of this genre!
- Charlize Theron is the most incredible and evil queen imaginable. Her performance is truly amazing.
- The Dark Forrest scenes are some of my favorite. It is not only more menacing but explained–an element of the film I know Disney fans will adore.
- I also really enjoyed the Enchanted Forrest scenes of this film. The fairies and the animals appear so real and it is, well…incredibly enchanting.
The Snow White and the Huntsman Extended Edition includes an extended version of the film not shown in theaters, as well as a digital copy of the film, compatible with iPhone®, iTunes®, iPad®, iPod®, iPod® touch, Android™ or online retail partners, and also includes UltraViolet™, the revolutionary new way for consumers to collect movies and TV shows in the cloud to instantly stream and download to TV’s, computers, tablets and smart phones. Of all of the DVD extras, I particularly loved the section on how the computer-generated effects are made. I was so intrigued to find out what was and wasn’t created using special effects and I think you will be too.

This was a pretty fun new version of the Snow White story. Of the two that came out this year, I generally preferred Mirror, Mirror a little more, but this one was still a lot of fun.

Charlize Theron certainly embodied the evil queen role.
