The Science of Gingerbread exhibit at the Discovery Cube science centers in Los Angeles and Orange County (very close to Disneyland) is going on now through January 3. This fun exhibit uses everyone’s favorite holiday cookie, gingerbread, to introduce visitors to a variety of scientific concepts, ranging from chemical reactions to the physics of building a study structure in earthquake-prone California. We recently visited the Los Angeles Cube and had a really great time! Here is a look at what you can expect to find at the Discovery Cube in Los Angeles.
Annual Gingerbread Derby
Children are given plastic bags including graham crackers, candy and common kitchen objects to create cars they can race down a track.
Gingerbread Spices Learning Station
Cube visitors learn about the common spices used in gingerbread and can smell their delicious aromas.
Kitchen Chemistry Learning Station
A science center staffers shows children scientific principles of chemical reactions using common items found in the kitchen cupboard.
Build A House
Children can build with different building block sets together (encouraging social interaction) and then test their skills to see if they have built a sturdy building that can withstand a mini earthquake.
Cookie Decorating
On weekends, kids can decorate sugar cookies on the first floor of the LA Cube at 11:30, 1:30 and 3:30. And yes, of course it is educational! Children are given bags of white icing and work with the science center staff to mix food coloring to make new colors.
Annual Gingerbread House Contest
This annual contest is open to the public and includes entries from kids and adults. These are NOT your run-of-the-mill gingerbread houses! My kids LOVED seeing the different structures and were particularly impressed with the gingerbread periodic table.
