Swordfights, daring stunts, and a few zany antics for good measure are but a few of the many qualities we have all come to love in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise. Johnny Depp joined by Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, and Geoffrey Rush deliver great pirate performances in the fourth installment of the movies based on the popular Disney parks attraction. The movie opens nationwide on May 20.
In this fourth installment chronicling the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, the Captain (Johnny Depp), Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) on behalf of the King of England, the infamous Black Beard (Ian McShane), and Angelica (Penelope Cruz)—a woman from Captain Jack’s past—are in a race to get to the Fountain of Youth. They must get there before the Spanish and along the way, they must search for items required to drink from the fountain.
For me, the mermaid storyline in this film sets it apart from all of the others. The mermaids are beautiful, enchanting, and dangerous and their climatic scene about halfway through the movie was my absolute favorite part of the entire move. Who knew that mermaids were so complex and could kick so much butt?!
For Pirates of the Caribbean ride fans, the movie will not disappoint. I don’t want to give it away, but true ride fans will pick up on several lines said in the attraction as well as one major scene that you will definitely recognize even if it has been years since you’ve experienced the attraction. There was a definite whisper in the audience when it came on the screen.
Because I know a lot of parents read my blog for the straight scoop on Disney and kids, I must answer the questions: Is Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides appropriate for children? While this movie is a must for fans of the attraction, it is NOT appropriate for children. In fact, I think it’s PG-13 is right on and it definitely not appropriate for children under the age of 13.
I know it’s hard for kids to see all of the commercials and promotions out there for the film. If you click here, you can download a Pirates of the Caribbean activity book that elementary school-aged children might enjoy since they can’t see the film.
I would like to thank the Disney Studios for inviting me to the film, for the activity book for my readers, and for allowing me to use the images in this post.

Lisa, thanks so much for the review. Leave it to Disney creativity- unconventional pirates, and now complex mermaids… I won’t get into a theater until next week, so this will “tide” me over 😀
As always, thanks for the Hop.
