“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is funny, fast, exciting and completely satisfying in every way. It is literally the perfect movie for fans of all types–from hard core comic book geeks to little kids hoping to see cool superheroes. In my expert oopinion (and by expert, I mean I am a total Marvel/comic book nerd and a dad of three kids) it is completely fine for kids of all ages. Bascially, there is no reason to not see this movie, unless you are just generally angry all of the time and do not want to have a really fun time at the movies with your kids.
What I Love About “Ant-Man and the Wasp”
The movie has the exact same feel and pacing of the first Ant-man. If you enjoyed that movie, this movie is picking up right after we last saw Ant-Man in action in “Captain America Civil War.” When this movie starts out we learn that there have been some consequences to the action in that film and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is paying the price for hanging out with the Avengers. But, even house arrest cannot stop our hero from getting back into the game in some really funny ways when we learn that he has to help bring back Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), who is Hope Van Dyne’s (Evangeline Lily) mother, Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) wife and the original Wasp, from the quantum realm before the bad guys (lead by one of my favorite actors, Walton Goggins) steals the tech currently being used by all of the above.
Phew. Still with me?
Anyways, some seriously cool action sequences involving everyday items, including cars, are shrunk and giant-sized to aid in the battles and add to the comedy. Speaking of comedy, that is what this movie is. And if you want your Luis storytelling fix like in the first film, well it’s back here and Michael Pena, once again, steals every scene he is in throughout the movie. The movie had the theater laughing and cheering throughout.
Everyone on screen looks like they are there to have fun and make you, the audience, laugh. They succeed and then some. After the heaviness of “Avengers Infinity War”, it was nice to dig into a separate adventure done with so much flair and overall fun. And be sure to stick around for the end credits of course as it ties into the overall Marvel world in a BIG way.
Is “Ant-Man and the Wasp” REALLY ok for kids?
YES! Like I mentioned above, this movie is completely kid friendly. No bad language. No overly violent or scary scenes, although really cool fight scenes are, of course, featured throughout. Even the villains are more comical than threatening. The main baddie, the Ghost, might creep out the littlest ones at first, but trust me when I tell you this Marvel movie is WAY MORE TAME than all of the others without losing its edge or sense of excitment.
Tips for Seeing “Ant-Man and the Wasp”
- There are some great surprises and cameos. This is the best Stan Lee cameo so far, in my opinion.
- We chose to see the movie in 2D, but I can tell you that I think 3D would probably blow you away. It seems like it was really made to be seen in that format, although I didn’t feel like we missed out on anything in the standard format.
- “Ant-Man and the Wasp” opens on July 6. Be sure to get your tickets early, because it is certain to sell out. Take the kids, and remember that you won’t have to put your hands over their ears or eyes at any point. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is a winner!
