This morning the kids and I headed out to our local AMC Burbank 16 to see Zootopia in one of the luxurious Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime houses. Talk about a double whammy of a Saturday morning: a great movie and a completely elevated movie-going experience.
Zootopia
I knew I was going to love Zootopia given the fact that I was able to see and experience so much of the behind-the-scenes at a long-lead press day back in October. (Click here and here to read those posts.) The film did not disappoint.
Zootopia is a modern mammal metropolis in a world sans humans. It has habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, but at its city core is the melting pot where animals from every environment live together—from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew. In Zootopia, “you can be anything,” but when rookie Officer Judy Hopps arrives in town, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t going to be easy. Judy is determined to prove herself, and she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering a scam-artist fox named Nick Wilde to solve the mystery. The movie takes the unlikely pair on an exciting adventure and requires these two animals, who aren’t natural-born friends to get along and work together.
The animation in this film pushes the limits on what we’ve seen in other animated films in the past. The details are in the trillions–every bristle of hair… every leaf… you name it. There is no detail too small for film makers who sought out to create a completely immersive, believable world and succeeded. My ten-year-old was completely engrossed in the film just as much as my five-year-old. I loved watching the reactions on their faces throughout all of the action scenes.
For me, you can’t beat the messages at the core of this movie: to never give up on your dreams, no matter how daunting they are and to never judge a person before you get to know them. Every kid needs those lessons. I also have to admit the music in the movie is an absolute home run. I’m also already slightly (ok totally) addicted to the movie’s theme song sung by Shakira. It has been a long time since I can say I’ve seen an animated movie I loved this much! Disney has really knocked it out of the park with this one.
Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime
When you see a movie at in a Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime, it’s a movie experience like no other. First, let’s just talk about the seats. They actually aren’t just; they are recliners… recliners with touch pads so you can create the most incredibly comfortable position. I swear I wish I had one of these in my house. (Then again, I probably would never stand up… so maybe it’s best that I don’t.) Plus, the recliners pulse with the action of the film. How great is that? Add to the seat movement, the immersive quality of the sound and screen, and the Prime experience takes movie watching to a whole new level. The sound is like nothing you’ve ever experience. The theaters have “moving audio” so that you can feel the sensation of the movement in the film as it relates to the sound in the film. Movies are shown in a format AMC has dubbed “dramatic imaging” featuring crisp, clear images with the most vivid colors and deep darks.
If you will be seeing #Zootopia this weekend, I highly recommend seeing it in a #DolbyCinema #prime at #amctheater. There is a full list of locations on the blog. #ShareAMC A photo posted by Babes In Disneyland (@babesindisneyland) on

Best of all, you can reserve your seat ahead of time, which means you don’t have to get to the theater early in hopes to of getting a decent place to sit. In Burbank, where I live, we have three AMC multi-plexes within walking distance of one another. All combined, the three theaters have 30 screens and even with that many screens going with all of the latest movies, you typically have to show up to a movie at least 30 minutes early to get a seat on the weekend. With kids adding an extra 30 (or more) minutes to the movie going experience can mean the difference between making it to the end of the movie with a happy preschooler … or perhaps having leave early when they’ve just had enough of sitting. Right now, Zootopia is showing in Dolby Cinema at AMC Prime in these theaters across the country:
AMC Desert Ridge 18, Arizona
AMC North Point Mall 12, Georgia
AMC Hawthorn 12, Illinois
AMC BarryWood 24, Missouri
AMC Garden State 16, New Jersey
AMC NewPark 12, Northern California
AMC Burbank 16, Southern California
AMC Century City 15, Southern California
AMC Deerbrook 24, Texas
AMC Willowbrook 24, Texas
AMC Hampton Town Centre 24, Virginia

One of the best parts of the entire morning was spending time with two other wonderful families from our town. The kids were all instant friends and it was a great feeling being able to provide a fellow Burbank family tickets to see such an amazing film and movie experience.
