Thor Ragnarok Review – by a diehard Marvel dad

October 19, 2017 in All Posts, Disney entertainment, movies by Will Robertson

When the first Thor movie came out, I remember loving the story and the music, I also remember being shocked that I laughed…out loud a few time. I couldn’t believe that Chris Hemsworth could be awesome as Thor, and funny too.

I will admit that I was not a huge fan of the second one. It was a bit too dark, and seemed to drag at times. When I heard about the third one coming out I figured I would just catch it on DVD ( is that still a thing?) or whenever.

Last night my wife and went to a screening the Disney Studios–not sure what to expect. Three minutes into the film, and already laughing as the title card came up, I started to think this might be a good one. And it is!

(See our thoughts on if it’s ok for kids at the bottom of this review.)

This movie is non-stop action and is laugh-out-loud funny the entire time. It looks like no other Marvel film to date. The sets, the costumes, and the overall visuals are stunning and never fail to amaze. Seriously, I did not want this movie to end.

Of course, I am a huge fan of all Marvel films and think that they have not put out even one stinker. I think the worst of the bunch was Dr. Strange, but after this movie, and his cameo, I might have to reconsider. So I loved it, but what truly shocked me were the elbows from my wife and her laughing so loud, I looked over at here to see if she was ok!

The film is full of fun Easter eggs, great new characters, Tessa Thompson playing the super awesome Valkryie, Karl Urban as Skurge, and Jeff Goldblum, playing a hilarious and creepy character called the Grandmaster. Plus we get Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in his best performance so far.

There are two movies here that weave together seamlessly. One follows Thor battling to save his home planet from a fantastic villain, Hela, played by the amazing Cate Blanchett, who looks like she is having as much fun being in this movie as we were watching it, and Thor and friends stuck on this amazing trash world ruled by Jeff Goldblums Grandmaster, where he teams up with the Hulk after an amazing fight.

Each half of this movie, fits into the other, and they both serve to form the resolution in a greatly satisfying way.

With all the cameos, great jokes, stunning visuals and all out action…it sometimes can be hard to appreciate or hear all that is happening. If that is the main problem with this film, then trust me, it is well worth your time. It reminded me why we go to the movies. To be wildly entertained and leave wanting more–and to see it again… and again… and again. Kudos to the director, writers and actors. You will be humming the music when you go home. It has music that is so good, that it made me want to buy/download the soundtrack.

Is Thor Ragnarok for kids?

My wife and I slightly disagree on this. We both agree it is a hard PG-13. I don’t think it has as much violence as either of the Captain America movies. There is a little adult innuendo and some pretty frightening skeletons and a lot of people dying. Although we both LOVED it, she thinks it is best for date night and I think it is ok for kids who have already seen the other Marvel films. We will likely let all three of our boys see it (ages 7, 10 and 12) and have our hands at the ready to cover our little guy’s eyes in certain parts.
