Tonight, Thursday, December 17 at 7p.m., PBS SoCal stations will premiere a new documentary, “Richard M. Sherman: Songs of a Lifetime.” Produced by acclaimed film producer/director and writer Don Hahn, the one-hour HD broadcast features Richard M. Sherman at the piano as he performs and shares the stories behind many of the timeless tunes of the Sherman brothers songbook (spanning rock n’roll, television, Hollywood, Broadway and Disney), plus many of his own compositions. It is a first-of-its-kind showcase of Sherman’s talents and highlights nearly 60 years of his popular songs, many written in collaboration with his late brother, Robert B. Sherman.
“Our PBS SoCal mission is to work with talented producers — like Don Hahn — to tell great stories about the creative genius found right here in Southern California,” said Andy Russell, President & CEO of PBS SoCal. “Richard Sherman has created some of the most iconic music of our time – and Don Hahn captured his persona and spirit artfully.”
In the documentary, Sherman will be joined by Broadway star Ashley Brown who was the original Mary Poppins on Broadway, as well as Juliana Hansen, a noted stage performer and cast member in the popular Aladdin musical stage show at Disney California Adventure. Sherman will also be joined by a barbershop quartet featuring Wesley Alfvin, Jim Campbell, Jon Schoenherz and Drew Tablak.
As a HUGE fan of the Sherman brothers songbook, I cannot wait to learn the stories behind the music and hear them sung by these iconic singers. Here is a preview of what this special has in store for Disney fans young and old.
