On Monday, the world lost one of the most influential composers of our time. Robert B. Sherman, the second half of the legendary Sherman brothers, passed away at his home in London after a long-time illness. Best known for his amazing contributions to music for Disney theme parks and films, he was also an avid writer and painter and was decorated with a Purple Heart for his courage in World War II.
Living in Los Angeles within walking distance of several major studios, it’s pretty commonplace for me to see “celebrities” walking down the street, at the hardware store or at the market. That being said, there are certain celebrities who still take my breath away–not because of their fame but for what they’ve down with their lives. The Sherman brothers are those such celebs. I recently had the opportunity to meet Richard Sherman, Robert Sherman’s brother, and I was rendered speechless and over taken by nerves.
The Sherman brothers not only composed music for Disney but they created childhood’s soundtrack and penned songs that are so well known and beloved that they often find their way in our everyday vernacular. They have touched the lives of millions by creating smiles and a happy jig for children since the early 1950s. Robert and his brother Richard have made an impact on society that will be felt for many, many generations to come and that is an accomplishment that most people will never claim.
While playing with your children today, I encourage you to celebrate the life of Robert Sherman by playing some of his music or singing his songs. A life with such a powerful impact should not be mourned by celebrated.
Thank you, Mr. Sherman, for all of the happiness you have brought the world. Your genius and understanding of the human condition will be greatly missed.
