Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree: Attraction backstory, information and review

July 10, 2012 in All Posts by Babes in Disneyland

Cars Land, one of the two new lands at Disney California Adventure, is home to a great new attraction, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. This attraction is a lot of fun for families and has a height requirement of 32 inches.

Located near the main entrance to Cars Land, the attraction is built on a ride floor system similar to the Mad Tea Party (aka “Teacups”) in Disneyland and Francis’ Ladybug Boogie in “a bug’s land” in Disney California Adventure. The floor at the Teacups is a single round plate that rotates. Disney Imagineering took the rotating floor concept up a notch with Francis’ Ladybug Boogie by making the floor two rotating round plates that the ladybugs move between, providing more movement to riders.

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree takes the rotating platform concept to the next level with four rotating floors. Combiningg the rotating floors with the fact that the ride vehicles are “freely” towed behind small tractors and guests are whipped around each time their tractor goes from one floor to the next.

Want to know the backstory on this attraction? Check out this video I shot with one of the imagineers behind the attraction, Chuck Flueck. He tells you the entire story behind the attraction and you can watch us in action on the attraction!

I absolutely love this new attraction. I adore the music, the ride concept and art direction and the innovation of the ride design. If you will be heading to Disney California Adventure with your family, here are my tips for Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree.
  • During these dog days of summer, the wait for this attraction will likely be pretty long. Happily once inside the attractions actual queue area, there’s lots for guests to look at. Mater has acquired quite a collection in his junkyard!

  • Children who are seven and older may ride this attraction solo. My seven-year-old rode it alone…twice and loved every second of his big-boy moment.
  • This attraction may not be a good fit for guests who don’t do well on attractions like the Teacups.
  • While the height requirement for this attraction is only 32 inches, my two-year-old didn’t do well on this attraction. He got really scared when the attraction whipped around and was a little difficult to hold on to as we maneuvered around the floor. Be very mindful of children three and under while riding this attraction and make sure they are sitting next to an adult who can hold on tight to them throughout the ride.
  • If you can’t get enough of this attraction, Mater’s Petting Zoo near the entrance of the attraction offers kids a place to snap a picture with a baby tractor.
  • If you just can’t get enough Mater (or baby Mater), head over to Sarge’s Surplus across from Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and stock up on some of the cutest merchandise you’ve ever seen!
