Disneyland wouldn’t have its ambiance without the gorgeous
landscaping that frequently changes throughout the park. I’ve always been a lover of plants and flowers and when I worked at Disneyland during college, I was thrilled every time the gardens outside our Main Street offices changed. From mums in the fall to tulips in the spring, there was always a changing kaleidoscope of color that brought the season to life.
Disneyland’s plant landscape is truly remarkable. More than 800 species of plants from more than 40 nations are represented at the resort, making it one of the most extensive and diverse botanical locales in the western U.S. The landscape panorama includes approximately 17,000 trees and 100,000 shrubs. Each year, about 1 million annuals are planted. The grounds are watered with more than 60,000 drip emitters and sprinkler heads. (Disneyland has a robust water conservation program. More on that below.) It takes a 100-person horticulture staff to maintain the many acres of greenery. Trees range in size from one-foot dwarf spruce in Storybook Land to 80-foot high eucalyptus trees. The Mickey Mouse flower “portrait” at the Disneyland Main Entrance is planted six times a year.
The Disneyland Resort is dedicated to doing what’s right for the environment, especially with the drought California is currently experiencing. They have devised an on-site weather responsive system to manage irrigation based on weather conditions. The system has 60,000 sprinkler heads with more than 100 satellite irrigation controllers. Low-flow irrigation systems are installed in areas throughout the Resort and flow sensors and cut-off valves are used to detect leaks. In addition, steps are also made to prevent water waste through evaporation.

It wouldn’t be Christmas time at Disneyland without the rich, red poinsettias. This is our first family trip to Disneyland with “A” was about 9 months old. |
