The Disneyland Resort has its own unique vocabulary that allows visitors and employees to leave the outside world and become completely submerged into the Disney mystique and culture. Here are some of the words and phrases you will get to know during your Disney adventure:
This is my friend Lori and me when we worked at the Main Street Bank. Back in the 90s, that’s where the tour guides processed annual passes. And yes, I rocked a perm in those days. |
- Cast Member: All Disneyland Resort employees are called Cast Members.
- Guest: Anyone who visits the Disneyland Resort.
- The Hub: Central Plaza is also known as the “Hub” of Disneyland. All of Disneyland’s lands radiate out from this point like the spokes on a wheel.
- Costume: Any Cast Member’s “uniform,” whether they sell popcorn or dance in a parade, is a costume.
- Guest Control: Cast Members who keep the flow of guests moving. (You’ll see them with long waving flashlights.)
- Backstage / Onstage: The Disneyland Resort’s operation is a daily show production. The parts of the parks visited by guests are considered “onstage” and the areas off limits to guests are “backstage.”
- The West Side and The East Side: Disneyland is roughly split down the middle with two “sides.” Fantasyland and Tomorrowland are considered the “east side” of the park and Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Frontierland, and Critter Country make up the “west side” of the park. Mickey’s Toontown is located at the “back of the park.”
- Off Property vs. On Property: This typically refers to hotels and restaurants. Services and lodging offered on the Disneyland Resort property are “on property.” Some area hotels with agreements with Disneyland are often also called “good neighbor hotels.” These terms will be covered in more detail later in this guide.
- 101: When anything is broken or inoperable at Disneyland, it is “one-oh-one.”
Information like this, and so much more, is available in my book, “Babes In Disneyland: The ultimate Disneyland Resort guide for families with young children.” The book is available at Amazon.com (and qualifies for Super Saver Shipping and is also available at Lulu.com at 20% off the cover price.
