I’ve been on a veritable character roller coaster with Emma, my youngest, for as long as I can remember. When she was a baby Emma loved the characters but by the time she turned one meeting and taking photos with the characters was a no go. As time has gone on however, Emma has gotten much more adventurous and has been excited to expand their character meet-and-greet horizons.
We’ve seen Cruella de Vil sauntering down Main Street many times over the years, but only from a distance as both of my kids were well, to be honest, a bit scared of her. Her wild hair, sour faces, and grouchy demeanor can be a bit intimidating, especially to young children. In February, while visiting Disneyland with my Mom, Emma’s Grammy, we happened upon Cruella. Armed with her princess autograph book and Pluto shaped pen Emma marched right up to Cruella and said “I don’t like you- you’re mean to the puppies.” Cruella burst out laughing and said “I know, I am- aren’t I?” The most fun and hilarious conversation ensued including Cruella drawing mustaches on all of the princesses in Emma’s autograph book. At one point she took off running to catch up with Pluto who was literally tip-toeing behind us to avoid her all the while shrieking “Pluto my friend, you’d make a lovely scarf.”
During our most recent trip Emma was insistent that we find Cruella so that her big brother could meet her too. When we caught up with her she was in her usual “mood” talking about puppies, what the kids were wearing, and even directing traffic on Main Street. Cruella was great at changing her pose and made a ton of hilarious faces while I was photographing her with the kids, which made for some amazing pictures. Our time with her did not disappoint and we have officially declared her our new favorite character.
Emma still refuses to take pictures with Captain Hook – telling him last time “you’re mean to Peter Pan,” and she’s right, he is, so who can blame her really??? Baby steps… it’s all about baby steps.

Love that she braved her fear of Cruella! My 5 year old son is so scared of Captain Hook that he hid under the table at the character breakfast! Hopefully he won’t be scared next time we go! My 2 year old daughter was loving all the characters though! I had expected the opposite!
