Wreck It Ralph joined the Disney DVD library of home video titles today and since it arrived in our home a couple of weeks ago, my house has not been the same. My kids have been “fixing” things like “Fix-It Felix” and had more pretend video game adventures than you can shake a joystick at.
Wreck It Ralph is the story of a video game character, Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly), who has played the bad guy in his popular video game for many years. In a bold move, he embarks on an action-packed adventure and sets out to prove to everyone that he is a true hero with a big heart. As he explores exciting new worlds, he teams up with some unlikely new friends including feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman). The movie also features the voice talents of Jack McBrayer as the voice of Fix It Felix, Jr. and Jane Lynch as the voice of Sgt. Calhoun. Kids enjoy the action of the film and slightly older viewers like my husband and I appreciate the references to video games of the past.
Wreck It Ralph is both action packed and heartfelt, as evidenced by these two clips:
The DVD set offers over an hour of all-new bonus material including deleted and alternate scenes, the theatrical short “Paperman,” and much more.
Also available now are a number of great apps and digital books that can keep the Wreck It Ralph fun going after the movie is over. As a former reading specialist, I love anything that excites kids about reading and iOS appls Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe and Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic are two apps that keep kids wanting to read.
Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe |
The Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe app is available in the App Store for $6.99 and features Ralph, Felix, Vanellope, and other favorite characters from the movie. The story follows Ralph as he wrecks his way through the arcade in search of a hero’s medal—and ends up finding much, much more. This app is great for emerging readers, because it reads to them, as well as older readers who may need help with their fluency. (Studies have shown time and time again that children who listen to stories, even if they are not reading the text themselves, become better, more fluent readers!)
Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic |
In the Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic ($1.99 in the App Store) readers are able to venture into the Hero’s Duty game to discover Dr. Brad Scott, Tammy Calhoun, the Space Marines, and the infamous cy-bugs as they fight on the unnamed planet. This app is ideal for older kids who love comic books, like my second grader.
Whether your kids decide to “wreck it” with the DVD or these fun iOS apps, they’ll have hours of fun!
