Exciting news for Disney fans, kids, and kids-at-heart! Disney is re-releasing the now classic movie, “The Little Mermaid” as a high-definition Diamond Edition! Now you can share one of your favorite childhood movies with your little ones!
Somebody is excited about what just arrived! |
If you’re a 30-something mom like me (or dad!) who loves Disney, then this movie probably defines your childhood in some way or another. I remember seeing it in the theater with my little sister – then buying the soundtrack on cassette tape – singing the songs for the next year – buying it on VHS, to watch over and over – and eventually coercing my mom into making a mermaid costume for Halloween! I even have memories of watching it all throughout high school and college – it is a movie that has really stood the test of time, and is still as relevant, thrilling, and fun today as it was when I was 7 years old. And the music is, in my opinion, among Disney’s best movie soundtracks of all time!
Checking it out |
I can’t tell you how excited I was to get the newest, and most vivid, high-definition version to share with my two kids! My husband and I both insisted that neither of us should watch it without the whole family present, and we were not disappointed – Liam (4) and Carolina (2) laughed, danced, proclaimed “Oh no!”, and watched transfixed with little mouths hanging open.
For those who aren’t familiar with the movie, Ariel (voiced by Jodi Benson), is a free spirited mermaid, who is off on the adventure of a lifetime with her best friend, the adorable Flounder, an the reggae-singing Caribbean crab Sebastian at her side. But it will take all of her courage and determination to make her dreams come true – and save her father, King Triton’s beloved kingdom from the sneaky sea witch Ursula (voiced by Pat Carroll). Run time, 83 minutes.
Who doesn’t want to get up and dance to “Under the Sea”? |
One of the best things about “The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition” is, of course, the many new bonus features – over 3 hours worth of them! Including, my favorite, the Disney Intermission and “Crab-E-OKE” sing-along videos that play whenever you pause the movie. So if someone needs a potty break, everyone else is entertained and having fun in the mean time! Other bonus features included are: an all-new music video of “Part of Your World” by Carly Rae Jepsen, the Real Little Mermaid: Live Action Reference Model, “Harold the Merman”: Meet a deleted character, part of Her World: Jodi Benson’s Voyage to New Fantasyland, and so much more! Check out this bonus clip of Jodi Benson (Ariel) as she’s coached on “Part of Your World.”
3-D – I bet it’s just |
“The Little Mermaid: Diamond Edition” can be purchased as a 3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (contains Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + Music Download), or the 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack with Digital Copy (contains Blu-ray + DVD/Digital Copy), and also as a 2-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray + DVD). My two cents is that any version with a Digital Copy is worth a little extra so that I can load it onto my smart phone and tablet to watch on the go!
So tell us, will you be getting the latest and greatest version of “The Little Mermaid”? Do you have any special memories of this movie from growing up, or from watching it with your kids?

I have a great memory of the Little Mermaid. When I was in high school, I babysat two little boys who had the movie on DVD. I didn’t have it at my house and I used to make these boys watch the movie every time I babysat them…which was a lot. They acted like they hated it, but I think they secretly loved it. They are adults now and I have to wonder if they think of me whenever they see it.
