Oz The Great and Powerful DVD Review

June 21, 2013 in All Posts, movies by Babes in Disneyland

Oz The Great and Powerful is now out on DVD and it is sure to be a long-time favorite in your family’s DVD collection. If you didn’t see it in the theater, the movie is a “prequal” to The Wizard of Oz and imagines the origins of the Wizard.
When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with questionable ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Oscar is drawn into the problems plaguing the Land of Oz and must figure out which witches are good and evil before it is too late and ultimately save Oz using his “magic” and his goodness deep within.

I will admit that my family and I didn’t catch this movie while it

was in theaters. As luck would have it, this Blu-ray was one of the first we played on our new TV and DVD/Blu-ray player. We fiddled with the screen sizes for about 30 minutes before we realized that the first part of the movie in black and white wasn’t in full screen! Once we figured out that we everything was ok and it wasn’t our new technology messing with us, I really enjoyed the movie. I loved the costumes, set design and Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams were amazing in their rolls. I also loved the china doll. She was so precious!

Is Oz the Great and Powerful for kids?
That’s a great question, and while I think it is certainly appropriate for older children, we’ve decided to not show it to our kids because of a couple of intense scenes. That being said, my husband and I may be a little over protective when it comes to what we do and don’t let our kids watch.
What I love about Oz The Great and Powerful:
This is the perfect movie to cuddle up on the sofa and eat a bucket of popcorn. It totally takes viewers into another world and it a great escape at the end of a long day. It’s also one of those perfect movies for those days when you’re home sick or it’s raining out!
The DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack features never-before-seen bonus materials including:
  • “The Magic of ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’ Second Screen Feature” that provides viewers with an immersive opportunity to journey into the fantastical lands of Oz
  • James Franco’s personal story of his journey to the land of Oz.
  • Mila Kunis’ makeup metamorphosis which is hosted by Academy Award-winning makeup artist Howard Berger
  • A back-stage journey through each of the visual effects process that brought China Girl to life including an interview with Joey King
  • And lots more!

Oz The Great and Powerful is available now online and through major retailers everywhere!
