It’s only days before Christmas, and what do you do when you need last-minute gifts for the kiddos on your list who love Disney? I recently had the opportunity to check out three items from the Disney Imagicademy available at Target. These hands-on toys, books and games are absolutely fantastic and provide kids with not only opportunities for creative play, but push them to learn and experiment with multiple mediums while providing hours upon hours of fun. If you shop NOW through December 21, you can still have them delivered to your house before Christmas on Target.com. You can also pick them up in store at your local Target.
We tried out…
Disney Imagicademy Activity Books
Part coloring book, part educational workbook, part art set, this book set provides kiddos hours and hours of fun with and learning. My five-year-old was able to do some pages independently (or with a bit of guidance) and others with my help or that of his brothers’.
We tried the Science (Frozen themed book) and Animals (Mickey-themed) books. What I really love about these books is that they come totally self contained with a pouch for all of the art supplies and accessories. They would be PERFECT for traveling–especially to keep a child entertained on a plane flight or long car ride.
Disney Imagicademy Storymation Studio Stop Motion Movie Kit
This toy is THE toy of the holiday season. I cannot believe how much fun we have had making stop motion movies with it. The idea of making a stop motion movie may feel daunting (it did for me), but this toy makes it so much fun and with its special app, it isn’t difficult AT ALL. Moeover, everyone in the family wanted in on the fun–parents and kids alike. It’s the perfect FAMILY gift.
The kit comes complete with everything you need (minus an iPhone or iPad). It includes the backgrounds for the scenes, three-dimensional Mickey and Minnie as well as flat (cardboard) characters from a variety of Disney film favorites like Peter Pan, Monster Inc. and many more. Also included are stand for the various characters and clear sticks to move them on the “stage.” Also included is clay to create props and accessories for characters and an iPhone/iPad holder.
We experimented with the app to get used to the process. We made a couple of short “movies” and played around with the photo editing app.
Taking photos with the app is a great way to get used to it before making an actual movie. When it came time for the final movie we made, we decided to go with Mickey and Minnie in Elsa’s winter wonderland. We used the clay to make scarves for Mickey and Minnie (out of the mold for Ana’s hair that comes with the kit.)
I know this video is really short, but it was an incredible amount of fun to make and I know we will keep on practicing to make better films, because that’s just what good artists do.
What’s really great (just like the activity books) is that this toy is totally self contained, meaning I don’t have pieces all over the place when it is not in use. Everything fits perfectly inside the kit, which is also the stage for your “productions.”
As a former teacher, I love coming upon toys that are not only fun, but educational and engaging and get my kids wanting to work together. These Disney Imagicademy toys do just the trick. It’s not too late to get them for Christmas or put them on your list for birthdays and other special occasions in 2016.
